The HON Report for May 2026 highlights several critical areas of concern and citizen feedback across health, education, housing, financial security, and governance:
- Healthcare Access and Quality Citizens strongly advocate for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to be expanded to cover major medical expenses and critical care, rather than just basic medications like “paracetamol”
- Key demands include providing more hospital beds to prevent preventable deaths, ending policies that require advance deposits before emergency treatments, completing the La General Hospital, and improving the attitudes and bedside manner of healthcare workers
- Education System Reforms A significant number of respondents want an end to the double-track system
- To improve education, citizens are calling for a reduced or more concise syllabus, the provision of free textbooks, and better access to practical, scientific, and digital learning tools, which are currently lacking in many areas
- Restoring strict discipline among both students and teachers is also a recurring priority
- Housing and Infrastructure Challenges The most pressing community challenges are the high cost of rent, poor sanitation (such as choked gutters and uncollected refuse), and an inconsistent water supply
- The majority of respondents indicate that housing in their area is barely affordable, and very few have accessed government housing schemes
- Pensions and Financial Security There is a widespread lack of trust in the national pension system
- To feel secure in their old age, most respondents plan to rely on their own personal savings, family support (children), and personal businesses or investments rather than formal pensions
- Additionally, many citizens note that they would struggle to afford basic care if a health emergency struck today
- Governance and Institutional Trust Trust in leadership and institutions is critically low. Most respondents feel that elected leaders prioritize personal or party interests over the public interest, and there is widespread distrust in the Electoral Commission
- To rebuild trust in governance, citizens are overwhelmingly demanding job creation for the youth, a reduction in the cost of living, transparency, and strict accountability for corrupt officials
